QUESTION

Does CBD Oil help a person with Type 1 Diabetes?

ANSWER

In the time that I’ve treated patients with Medical Cannabis & CBD Oil, a lot of these patients came to me for either chronic pain, anxiety, or insomnia, but they also happened to have Diabetes. So when they came in a year later for their follow up visit, I would ask what sort of impact has the Medical Cannabis or CBD Oil had on their Hemoglobin A1C – which is a long-term measure of blood sugar levels – and for their daily blood sugar levels – which is a short-term measure of blood sugar levels. In all the cases, patients indicated that neither Medical Cannabis nor CBD Oil had an impact of their Hemoglobin A1C or their daily blood sugar levels. So, neither Medical Marijuana or CBD Oil make Diabetes worse, but they also don’t help to make it better either.

QUESTION

How does someone start CBD Oil and start weaning off of prescription medications that they’ve been on for several years?

ANSWER

Prescription medications fall into 2 categories. You have the prescription medications that you can come off of cold-turkey without any consequence. And, then you have the prescription medications that you have to wean off of to avoid with-drawl symptoms, the worst of which can be death.

In my practice, I’ve had patients take either CBD Oil or Medical Marijuana in conjunction with their prescription medications. And, once they’ve figured out the right combination of CBD & THC, the appropriate dose, and the right frequency of dosing, then I have them talk with either their primary care doctor or the specialist who prescribed their prescription medication about coming off of their prescription medications. And, the doctor can then let the patient know whether it’s safe to come off of the prescription medication cold-turkey or to wean off the prescription medications and how to wean off of the prescription medication.
