QUESTION:

My wife has Stage IV Cervical Cancer. She’s been through 6 sessions of chemotherapy. And, she’s about to start 5 weeks of radiotherapy. I had been led to believe through some articles that CBD Oil is excellent treatment for cancer-related pain. I’m becoming more confused the more articles I read. Dr. Patel, what do you suggest?

ANSWER:

To better answer this question, I need to know what type of pain your wife is having.

In general, some types of pain benefit from high amounts of CBD. Some types of pain benefit from CBD & THC.

Nerve pain and muscle pain benefit from high amounts of CBD, whereas joint pain typically benefits from both CBD & THC.

QUESTION:

I’ve heard the best way to treat nerve pain is with Cannabis suppositories. Is this true? I live in Canada. And have tried Cannabis Oil and vaping Cannabis. It takes the nerve pain away some, but not enough. And, I haven’t been able to get off my pharmaceuticals.

ANSWER:

In my experience, Cannabis suppositories are used when the other methods of use are not viable. For instance, when someone cannot use drops under their tongue or can’t ingest for whatever reason or they can’t inhale, then that’s when as a physician I turn to Cannabis suppositories.

When it comes to Cannabis being effective, there are a couple different factors that come into play. It’s not like you use it and automatically your nerve pain is gone. You need to take into account the strength of the Cannabis product. You have to look at the amounts of CBD & THC and their relative ratios. You need to take a sufficient dose of the Cannabis product for it to be effective. And, lastly, you need to take into account the frequency of dosing. It’s important to ensure that you’re dosing frequently, but not too often. There’s a methodical way to go about using Cannabis for each and every medical condition and symptom so that it’s effective. And, that’s what I walk folks through in my consultations.

QUESTION:

I have a horrible condition – Trigeminal Neuralgia. What’s more effective for Trigeminal Neuralgia – CBD Oil or Medical Marijuana?

ANSWER:

For nerve pain in general, what’s effective for mild-to-moderate pain are high amounts of CBD, whether that CBD is derived from marijuana or hemp. With severe nerve pain, in addition to the CBD you do need some amount of THC to effectively treat the nerve pain.

QUESTION:

Where can I get CBD Oil? Where can I get medical marijuana?

ANSWER:

Medical marijuana in the United States is available legally in states that have legalized marijuana for either recreational or medical use, or both.

If the state has legalized for recreational use, then typically as long as you’re over the age of 21, you can walk into a medical marijuana dispensary and purchase medical marijuana products.

If the states has legalized for medical use, then you need to see doctor for an evaluation deems medical marijuana beneficial for your particular medical conditions or symptoms and issues a medical marijuana card, medical marijuana recommendation or medical marijuana certification. You then take the medical marijuana card, the medical marijuana recommendation, or the medical marijuana certification to a medical marijuana dispensary to purchase medical marijuana products.

CBD products are typically available online, at health food stores, and often also at medical marijuana dispensaries.
